“To be fully alive, fully human and completely awake is to continually be thrown out of the nest. To live fully is to be always in no-man’s-land, to experience each moment as completely new and fresh. To live is to be willing to die, over and over again. ”
— PEMA CHODRON, WHEN THINGS FALL APART
Welcome to Alex Yiu Yoga.
Alex began his journey in yoga and mindfulness in 2014, after transitioning from a career in private law to public law with the Alberta Court of Appeal.
Unhealthy, overweight, and depressed, Alex reached a crossroads in his life. Choosing to pursue the path of health and wellness through the practice of yoga and mindfulness was a decision that profoundly changed the trajectory of his life.
Currently, Alex practices as a senior Associate Lawyer at a full-service law firm in downtown Edmonton. His preferred areas of practice include aboriginal law, administrative law, civil & commercial litigation, and insurance law. He considers himself foremost a "contemplative" or "mindful" lawyer, due much in part to his training in yoga and mindfulness.
From the first day he laid his yoga mat down in the hot room, to now, Alex can still feel the wash of emotions come over him, a cleansing and feeling of renewal each time he steps into the hot room. Yoga stripped Alex down to allow him to truly see the inner strength that he - and all of us- always possessed to weather the ebbs and flows of life. Yoga taught Alex how to deal from the centre amidst the raging storms of life.
Alex's Yoga Training - Anahata Rising School of Yoga
On June 23, 2016, Alex was proud to receive his 200hr Yoga Teacher Training certificate from the Anahata Rising School of Yoga based at Bliss YogaSpa in Edmonton, Alberta. Alex received his training under the tutelage of Sheena Mason (Founder) and Lindsey Park (Lead Trainer).
Alex is trained to guide hot and regular temperature vinyasa-style flow classes for all levels (with modifications) with a focus on alignment, body awareness, opposing forces of yin/yang, contraction/relaxation, regulation of breath, and 'pranayama'(or ‘breath control’) techniques to prepare the body for 'yoga asana' or posture practice. He also employs guided meditation and visualization exercises to encourage the practitioner to turn his/her outward gaze to the inner realm of the subtle body.
Yoga has always remained for Alex a deeply meditative practice – indeed, yoga IS a moving meditation.
Alex's goal as a yoga teacher is to provide a supportive and safe space for each of his students so that he or she may “drop in” on him/herself to experience the integration of body, mind, and breath in the wonder of the present moment. It is this integration that he believes constitutes the deep work of the practice of yoga (that continues always) and allows us to work towards greater freedom and clarity in our life.

For Alex, it would be an honour and privilege to share the practice of yoga with you. This practice has changed – no, saved – his life in many, many ways.
The gift of self-compassion, peace and freedom awaits us, always. There is no better time than now to begin the honorable work of self-observation.
May we lessen our own suffering so that we may, in turn, help to lessen the suffering of our brothers and sisters.
May you be blessed always in abundant happiness, hope and love, always.
